Pacifica : Special interview with Tait, the dream maker

Have you ever been a bit lost in life, not been sure which path to take ?

That’s what Pacifica is all about: finding a path. May be one day, Pacifica could become a mobile game, a line of toys and figures, because Pacifica is a webcomic you can play with, jump to a page, then go back … Got it ? When you read Pacifica, you are in the middle of a dream.

Let’s talk about it with Tait, creator and dream maker !

Hello Tait, welcome on Art Of Webcomics !
– Where do you come from ??
Northern California. The setting for Pacifica is greatly influenced by growing up in and near redwood forests and Pacific beaches. The beauty of this location is what inspired me to base my fantasy world on it. The forests here really give you a sense of being in another place or time where anything is possible.
– How old are you ? ( tell it or not !)?
Older than when I was born, younger than when I die.
– Influences ??
Alphonse Mucha, Winsor McCay, Charles Vess, and many others.
– Art school or not ??
I have a BA in Art from Humboldt State University. It’s not specifically an art school, but the program there is pretty good. This area supposedly has the most artists per capita of anywhere in California so it’s a good place to immerse yourself and learn. The local community is very art oriented.
– Favorite digital art software ??
Clip Studio Paint
– Your working method ??
I work all digitally at the moment, but I would like to get back to doing sketches with pencil and paper then scanning them in and doing the rest of the arranging and sketching digitally. That’s how I was working in the beginning, but switched to all digital to try and save some time. I really like working traditionally and having the rough pencil sketches though.
– What your webcomic is about, in a symbolic way, the hidden sense ??
Pacifica is about a lot of things, but the main theme at the moment is about being a bit lost in life and not being sure which path to take. Other characters will soon be introduced who are in the same lost situation and a lot of the story will be about how they work together to find a direction.
– Tell us more about your main character, the hero !?
Well, the main focus is on Gavin right now. He’s a bit jaded and cynical when it comes to other people. His favorite place is to be in the forest alone. He tends to be happier and more positive there, so the beginning of the story has focused on that. He’s about to meet some other people though and will be taken out of his relative comfort. At that point the focus of the story will shift to the overall group more than Gavin.
– How do you see your future ??
I hope to be spending more time working on comics and writing within the next couple years. It would be nice to quit my day job and focus on Pacifica full time.
– Your next goal ??
My next goal is to release pages of the main comic more frequently. I’d like to do a small spinoff that shows other parts of Pacifica’s world and lore, but I need to focus on getting pages out faster right now. I have lots of ideas and things I would like to do eventually.
– Advices for beginners ??

Just start your project. Don’t wait to be “good enough”. Improve as you put it out there or you may never get started at all.

– Your technical secret trick ??
I try to work very large so that I can print my pages out at a decent size or reuse bits of art for other pages or projects. I also have some templates for really complex, detailed background stuff that I can slap together to quickly create semi-unique backgrounds with a little less work. For example I have a document that is just fern fronds I can mix, mirror, and rotate to quickly create a bunch of plants to fill in areas of the forest.
– Favorite quote ??
There are a lot of quotes I like, so I don’t know if I could pick a favorite, but a good one from Donald Woods Winnicott is:

?Artists are people driven by the tension between the desire to communicate and the desire to hide.?
