Poco Adventures : Let’s chat with Bryan Climer !

Clever and bright, Bryan Climer has created his own world : Poco Adventures !

No need to be Peter Jackson today to launch your own universe, and it’s just a beginning ! A larger Poco-verse might be in the works…

Hi Bryan, welcome on Art of Webcomics !
– Where do you come from ??
USA
– How old are you ? ( tell it or not !)?
32
– Influences ??
Marvel comics, DBZ, Anne MccAffrey and other Fantasy Authors
– Art school or not ??
Some AP Art courses, but otherwise, no.
– Favorite digital art software ??
Photoshop
– Your working method ??
Sketch in journal books, with the story mapped out, take a picture of it and digitize it in Photoshop much larger and in higher dpi
– What your webcomic is about, in a symbolic way, the hidden sense ??
Well seeing as it’s the ‘monsters’ of the fantasy world, I explore not only the paradigm of how well they work together, but that they live perfectly reasonable and normal lives like anyone else… but society hates them for one reason or another – and they are just as capable, if not more in a lot cases, as the society that rejected them, BECAUSE they work well together.

Diversity of thought and ability over stagnant homogeny.

– Tell us more about your main character, the hero !?
Poco is a pragmatic opportunist Goblin with a zest for life and is supremely capable when she puts her mind to something. She has some flaws like forgetfulness, over-excitement, hair-brained schemes that could be seen as genius if they actually work, she’s quick to anger and will lash out – sometimes too much, and she has romantic feelings for her second in command – but she has such a sense of duty she won’t act on it and pines from a distance.

– How do you see your future ??
Hopefully continuing the adventures of Poco for a couple thousand pages… I have intimations of a larger Poco-verse too, with multiple stories (some already written!) in different settings, as well as coloring books, kids books, D&D adventure paths, miniatures, etc… But for now, I’m a new father so I’m also pretty focused on raising my new kiddo 🙂
– Your next goal ??
Finish digitizing Chapter 1 and get started on Chapter 2, while I start writing chapter 3.
– Advices for beginners ??

I did a different webcomic long ago – about 10 years prior to this one… and it’s only gotten harder to gain a following, so my strongest advice is: do it for yourself – not for the following, not for others, make it about doing it for yourself first… you can advertise and self promote often, but if you’re not doing it for yourself you may not see returns on a following for quite a while.

1 year into doing Poco Adventures, I’m JUST NOW starting to see people regularly comment or share my work…and it’s still pretty sporadic.

– Your technical secret trick ??

Do HUGE backgrounds and use various pieces of them for your scenes… you’ll have only done 1 BG, but can chop it up to make multiple backgrounds. Also, if you have plans to do similar scenes in the same area, make sure you catalog your background and object assets well with some sort of file structure. Also, have some sort of ‘cloud backup’ that always runs, like google drive or OneDrive.
– Favorite quote ??

If you fall 9 times, Get up 10.

– Your social links and website ??
