MK’s Jekyll & Hyde: Meet Marika Kapogeorgakis!

4.9/5 - (7 votes)

What if Jekyll and Hyde was not one single person, but two ? That’s the brillant idea of Marika Kapogeorgakis!

Author and webcomic artist, Marika is also known for her work on a poetic webcomic series called Word Is The Bird.

Today we’re gonna focus with her on The Strange Case Of Dr. Jeckyll & Mr. Hyde, an adaptation that Robert Louis Stevenson would probably have liked very much.

– Art school or not ?
I am 100% self taught and still learning.
– Favorite digital art software ?
I swear by GIMP. It has everything I need without the frills and all of the substance.
– Your working method ?
I try to make at least two pieces a day. I sketch first by hand, then ink by hand, I scan and clean up on GIMP, then I colour and shade on GIMP. Then the picture is ready for the world.

– What your webcomic is about, in a symbolic way, the hidden sense ?
The meaning is not really hidden at all. It’s really about duality and how our concept of good twin and bad twin is wrong and outdated. We’re all gray people even when our moral alignment is good or evil. And also, their experiences change them with time.
– Tell us more about your main character, the hero !
Dr. Jekyll is a very nice guy, but to a huge a fault. He is terrified of confrontation because he lacks confidence in his own worth which makes him prone to getting used or walked all over. He is also very emotional and is not above crying in public, but when push comes to shove, he does the right thing. Mr. Hyde is wild party animal of a troll with the opposite problem of Jekyll. He looks out for himself and is afraid to get too attached to people to avoid being used even though it is obvious that he does care about others. He also doesn’t realise how self destructive it is to isolate yourself until things come to a head. However, his true colours always come through when it comes to doing the right thing.

– How do you see your future ?

I see myself creating as long as I live. Will I go down in history? I don’t know, but I cannot imagine myself as anything now and forever other than an artist.

– Your next goal ?
I intend to do a Wizard of Oz sequel (the book not the movie) featuring Dorothy’s adult great-grandson who gets transported into another world and goes on a life changing adventure of his own there. I also intend to make a whimsical romantic comedy called Coach Cupid in which THE Cupid is literally coaching a married couple on the brink of divorce to be in love again.
– Advices for beginners ?
Always trust your instinct and be true to yourself when writing. It is ok to listen to what people want, but don’t forget what you want first.

Art is an act of love and the art of comics is not the exception.

With that said, be yourself through your art, so your audience can truly see the love you put into it.
– Your technical secret trick ?

I don’t really have one. I just do what comes to me and see where it goes from there.
– Favorite quote ?
“Do or do not. There is no try.” – Yoda from Star Wars. This is THE thing I live by in everything.
– Your social links and website ? Where to find you !
